I’m Getting Old And I Blame Oyster

Hello there and I hope that you are all doing great today.

So the other day I was reading a book called ‘Making Music’ with my 10 year daughter. As usual, I like to ask her questions not just about what she understands from the book  in question, but other things that may be related to the book. This is to get her thinking.

She proceeded to explain to me how music conductors on occasion have to keep their hands raised for up to 3 hours at a time. Very interesting stuff from the book.

Anyway, like I said, in an attempt to get her thinking beyond what she had just read . I asked her where else a conductor could be found or what other type of conductors exist.

She seemed a little puzzled.  After a few minutes…

She said – online??!!!

Okay. In my wisdom and not really thinking about it properly, I hastily reminded her of bus conductors. Nodding my head quickly and hoping that she’ll agree. It never came.

She simply looked at me with a blank face…at this point I realised that she’s never been on a bus with a conductor. I just felt so old.

Seriously, has the introduction of the Oyster Card resulted in bus conductors becoming extinct?

Can any UK resident reading this remember the London Bus 8 that goes into the West End? The good old days when you’d hop on the bus even when it was pulling away from the bus stop. Risky stuff in those day. When the conductor knew your stop and would even press the bell for you before you got out of your seat.

Oh well, at least she learnt something new.

If you know an area in London where bus conductors still exist, please leave the details in the comment box as I’d love to take her for a ride.

I’m out of here and I hope you enjoyed todays’ blog.

Iron Lady Smoothie

Hello peeps and how have you all been doing lately? For those of you who know me, I’m crazy about smoothies.

My love for smoothies started several years ago when I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in my early 30s. ‘d read that what I eat could play a big part in helping me with this very chronic illness. The rest is history really.

Here I am several years later and still loving smoothies – and I know for sure that my instafolks also enjoy it when I post some of my favs.

I like to give my creations special names and this one is no different. I’ve called it Iron Lady not because it has anything to do with the Late Margaret Thatcher, but because it’s packed with iron enhancing nutrients – another deficiency that I have due to the illness, plus my big sis also revealed to me the power of a vegetable that I’d been using for so long – without even knowing all of it’s useful properties.

Enough said and let’s get on with it.

Beetroot/beet(as our American folks like to refer to it)

Spirulina powder

Wheatgrass powder

Moringa powder

Fresh orange juice

Gluten free milled linseed of goji berries, sunflower and pumpkin seeds

Red currants

That’s it. Measurements? Nah, I can’t be bothered with all that faffing about with scales. Sorry

I’m out of here.

See you soon and do feel free to check out my Instagram page for a lovely photo of the above mentioned or this link to one of my summer sunshine concoction.

Beet Bowl Smoothie

Hello again everyone. I’m back talking about the love of my life – no, not that – I meant my smoothies.

Beet Bowl

Now isn’t she just a beauty?

See the thing is, I often wondered how my fellow smoothie lovers made their smoothie bowls and thought there was more to it than meets the eye – wrong.

I hooked up with an Instagramer(is this even a real word) who explained it to me in a few words how it’s done and as they say, the rest is history.

Let’s get on with it

  1. Beet/Beetroot
  2. Banana
  3. Cinnamon powder
  4. Fresh Ginger
  5. Fresh Garlic
  6. Greek Yoghurt

  1. Spinach leaves
  2. Chia seeds

I’m very adventurous with my smoothies in terms of the ingredients that I use.

In this beautiful creation, I have an ingredient which isn’t part of my staple. Can you spot it?

I’d love to hear from you on what you think it is and why you think I like to use it. The correct answer will give me an insight into how much you know about me.

For one correct answer, you get half a point, For the full answer, I’ll check out you blog if you leave details of your blog in the comment box.

Feel free to check for clues  to the question on my Instagram page @sawyerrshouse.

Here is a useful link of a smoothie for you to try out

Until next time, remember to be good and keep smiling.

Another Q & A Chat With My 12 Year Old

Mum: Yeah?

Daughter: In Maths, we are going to be learning about something called Pathology Theory

Mum: In maths? What did you call it?

Daughter: Pathology Theory.

Mum: Are you sure it’s Maths and not Science?

Mum: (scratches her head). Babes, do you mean Pythagoras Theory?

Aphrodisiac Love Potion

Daughter: Yeah, yeah, yeah – that’s the one.

Mum: You’ve been watching way too much CSI on tv…

The things that my kids come out with sometimes has me cracking up so badly.

Anyway, good job she has a sense of humour, as we both laughed together.

Pythagoras theory is being taught quite early as she’s only in Year 7. She has since learnt the theory and enjoyed it thoroughly. Another mathematical box has been ticked off.

Folks, I hope you enjoyed this one.

Stay tuned for more of these as my 10 year is even funnier.

Aphrodisiac Love Potion

Hello readers, visitors, viewers and my patient instagrammers.

My sincere apologies for the delay in posting this. Social Media took over.

A few days ago I posted a lovely picture of my love potion smoothie. Yes, you heard me right. The thing is, I actually didn’t know I’d been drinking  this until my big sis pointed it out to me after reading the package. Well, as soon as she said this, I was so quick to use this special ingredient again

It all began to make sense as to why I had been feeling so loved up lately – I’m only kidding.

What is it? Irish Moss. Also known as Carrageenan which is widely used in the Caribbean. The men love to use this to make drinks – I wonder why?

Initially, I had purchase Irish Moss to use it in my hair as I like to buy multipurpose products. Well, it left my hair in a hot mess.

The ingredients I used to create this recipe are as follows:

  • Shed loads of mints
  • Spinach
  • Apple Cider Vinegar(acv)
  • Mild Rocket
  • Overripe plantain, and
  • Irish Moss, of course
  • Red currants were used as topping

I basically tore off some of the irish moss and boiled it in some water and acv. Left it to stand overnight and used some of it. I simply scooped some into my smoothie and blitzed it with everything else.

The thing about irish moss is that it is very gelatinous in consistency, so a little goes a long way. I used a lot as I’m greedy like that.

You can also choose to blend it, or simply drain off the gel and use that. Remember to drain the gel whilst the mixture is still hot.

A word of warning – if you have never tried irish moss before, go easy on it because due to the gel it gives off – you and  your toilet bowl may have to be tied to each other for a while. If you get my drift.

It also has a weird taste that I just can’t describe and can be used in soups as well.

My lovelies, thanks for hanging in there with me and for your patience. I’ll see you in the next post.

DIY Butter

diy butterOh dear, it’s been a while. I’ve missed you all, but I’m back again.

You know the saying, “practice makes perfect”….well, I’ve been practising to perfect this butter.

This diy butter is everything – it’s yummy, it’s utterly buttery, it’s delicious, it’s creamy, it’s scrumptious and it was brewed in my very own kitchen.

  • Shea butter
  • Bio oil
  • Grapefruit Young Living Essential Oil

C’mon people, I know you were thinking food – aside from the bio oil, you could quite easily eat if – go check out the photo on Instagram @sawyerrshouse.

Whip up all the ingredients a few times and pop it in the freezerfor about 30 minutes to solidify slightly…but don’t leave it in there for too long. Whip it vigorously again after taking it out of the freezer.

It’s a body butter which my one and only nephew asked me to make for him(he’s only 12 years old) – at least he has the confidence in me to trust me to make him a body butter…for him to take back with him to school….and specifically asking me to add some essential oil. I had to be careful not to add something like lavender as he wouldn’t be too pleased smelling so ladylike.

Shame I didn’t have any musk essential oil or similar to hand.

Go son…I know you’ve always got my back when it comes to your genuine belief in me.

Folks, as you know, I don’t do measurements. All I can say is that, use more shea butter, about 1-2 tablespoons of bio oil and a few drops of the essential oil.

As far as bio oil is concerned, it’s an ok oil, but you can substitute it for a better oil like olive oil, coconut oil, emu oil or jojoba oil.

I’m out of here for now, be good, keep smiling and see you soon.

Smoothie Hiatus

Hey peeps I know you all are having a great day.

If you don’t already know – I’m a big time smoothie junkie.

Today’s creation is a smoothie bowl – which comes after 5 days of not having one.

I did feel like I had the jitters from the hiatus.

Here it goes and what you’ll need to make your own deliciousness using your smoothie maker:

  • Banana
  • Mango
  • Lychee
  • Greek yoghurt
  • Fresh lemon juice

For garnish, I’ve added:

  • Chia seeds
  • Coconut rolls
  • Coconut chips
  • Homemade granola

As you can see, I haven’t provided you with measurements – I don’t really do measurements as it takes away the fun.

PS – remember to rinse out any leftovers in your smoothie maker and gulp that down – waste not want to. This idea was given to me by my big sis.

The key to a thickish smoothie bowl is to use less liquid and for a regular smoothie – use more liquid.

Check out the photo of this lovely smoothie on my Instagram page @sawyerrshouse.

However, you can click this link to try out a refreshing smoothie bowl jam-packed  with goodness

Until next time, ciao.
